WBLA Annual Oyster Roast (11 bushels later)
Where do you begin? What a great turnout despite the weather. There were 70-80 outstanding supporters present for our annual fundraiser. We were outta oysters by 9 o’clock. Many thanks to all the volunteers, headed up by Suz Dickson, who put it all together, and stayed after to clean-up the mess.
We were surprised by Paco Strickland’s better half, Carlie, who donated $400.00 to our new internal scholarship. This scholarship if available to a member/ or family in the club, that applies and is selected to assist financially in their current educational development. This year the scholarship is dedicated in Paco’s honor/name because he was such a great person, in and out, of the water and a true believer in investing in one self. He had a heart as big as the sun, and was a most accomplished guitarist and surfer. Paco had been a longtime supporter of the organization. Thanks Carlie!!!!
We had a most unusual raffle drawing for more than twenty or so pries, some of which were donated by John, the rep. from Sanuk! Leon McKay bought extra raffle tickets at the door, and it paid off big time! He was the happiest winner, when his name was drawn for the 9’2″ Savage Longboard! Go Leon!! He also was so lucky, he won 4 other items in the raffle! Many of our members stuck around just to rub his head, in hopes that he could share some of his luck! Go buy a lottery ticket Leon, and share with your poor friends!
Anyway, great evening with extended family and new friends, and we look forward to the remaining Holiday Season, and wish all of our fellow surfers a Happy Holiday’s and glassy hollows!!!!
With love, admiration and thanks to all,
November 19th Meeting Recap
Wow, what a gathering of the tribe! Many of our past members, whose lives are so busy in today’s working environment, were present to meet Jarrod Covington, WBLA’s 2013 “All Waterman”. The perpetual trophy that will reside at the WB Museum was on hand and his name is carved into the first of 32 years of champions!
Good to see Robert Choate, Crazy Bear, Dave Endress, Jo and Ed Pickett and so many others at the meeting! Glad you could join us. Go Tribe!
A new member added to the tribe, Austin Yergan, of Wrightsville Loop, is now officially a member! Don’t cut him off in the water, he is one of ours!
Additionally, we had Dan Johnson, from Blind Dog Surfboards give us a overview of how he makes a totally wooden surfboard. It was very interesting to see the inards’ and finished product. They start at $1100-1200.
Special recognition for Shawn O’Donnell from Wrightsville Glassing, for his continued contributions to the org over the last 4 years, as El’ Presidente’.
Can-drive to help the homeless or less fortunate will be collected at the oyster roast by Dave Wilson.
Goodies for our service men and women will be collected by Peter Fritzler and shipped over the great pond to ease some tension when they have personal needs or some down time. Lots of surfing mags and baby wipes! Real tension there!
Lots of stuff will begin showing up on the web about next years 2014 WBLA Longboard Classic Pro-AM soon after the holiday season comes to a close!
“Surf to Sound” Paddle Board Surfing Honors
Wrightsville Beach, N.C. – Following a Canadian sweep of the North Carolina Surf to Sound competition on Saturday, Wilmington area athletes Jarrod Covington and April Zilg won top honors on Sunday in the Men’s and Women’s divisions of the East Coast Paddle Surf Championship.
”Sun and waves. We couldn’t ask for anything better in November,” said Covington. “The surf was excellent, about waist to chest high with clean ocean conditions. The wind was light. The sun was shining all day and everyone was sitting on the beach like the middle of summer. Absolutely perfect.”
Sunday, logistics and judging for the East Coast Paddle Board Championship was provided by the Wrightsville Beach Longboard Association and Jo Pickett, women’s coach for the 2014 Eastern Surfing Association All-Star Team.
”I think this was a great event. This is the biggest standup paddleboard surfing event,” said Shawn O’Donnell, President of WBLA. “Conditions were unheard of for a contest. We had dream conditions.”
